Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
An intravenous pyelogram is a special series of x-rays ordered by your doctor to evaluate the urinary tract for stones, anatomic abnormalities, or to determine the source of blood in the urine. It starts with a preparation to clean out the bowels taken the night before the test. This will help your doctor better examine the x-rays. You will need a simple blood test prior to the procedure to make sure your kidney function is normal. An IV will be inserted so the intravenous contrast can be administered. The x-rays are taken at periodic intervals after the contrast is given. Your doctor will interpret the x-rays and review the results with you.
