The Solution: What We Do

The mission of Safe Kids Wake County is clear - to reduce preventable injuries and death in Wake County children ages 19 and under from:

Motor Vehicle Incidents
Distracted Driving and Walking Incidents
Bicycle Crashes
Fire and Scald Burns
Falls
Sports Injuries
Drownings
Poisonings
TV Tipovers
Button Battery Ingestion

Safe Kids Wake County identifies and targets the injury problems most prevalent in the area, and then, by calling on the combined resources of the diverse membership, plans and implements strategies to address those problems by:

Calling attention to the problem, through media and public awareness activities
Advocating for improvements and enhanced safety legislation and enforcement
Providing educational programs for children and families
Distributing lifesaving safety devices to families in need

The Problem: Preventable Injuries

Unintentional injuries are the #1 killer of children ages 1-19 in the United States. Every hour, a child dies from an injury that was entirely preventable. These injuries cost society more than $200 billion each year. Ninety percent of these injuries could be prevented if families took the simple steps necessary to protect their children. We can change this. By working at the local and national levels we can educate, raise awareness and motivate families in our communities to promote childhood injury prevention and to join us in keeping kids safe.
