What to Expect During Your Stay at Our Rehab Hospital

Your Arrival

Because your family is an important part of the treatment process, we strongly encourage a family member to come with you on the first day. If you will be transported to our facility by ambulance, your family should follow and assist with check in. Please be sure to bring insurance identification cards with you for check in.

What to Expect Your First Day

  • Check in – A receptionist or nurse will ask you or a family member to sign admission papers and provide insurance coverage information. If you have additional questions about your insurance, please bring a copy of your policy so we can help you review it.
  • Your room – After showing you to your room, the nurse will explain the basics of rehab care and how you and your family will be involved.
  • Meet your treatment team – Throughout the day, some of the members of your team will introduce themselves and prepare you for what to expect in your therapy program. The nurse will take your history and perform a physical assessment. The physiatrist and midlevel practitioner will meet and examine you. The physiatrist will determine your medical plan of care and write orders. The case manager will meet with you to gather your input and address any questions or concerns you have.

Getting Started

Early in your stay, we will hold a team conference to discuss goals, treatment schedule and length of stay. This is done with input from you and your family to make sure the care plan meets your goals. Then, we will continue to hold team conferences each week to review your progress and make any needed adjustments in your care plan.

Your case manager will keep you and your family members informed after each conference. We encourage you to discuss any questions or concerns you have with your case manager.

Discharge and Transfer

Your clinical case manager coordinates your care throughout your rehabilitation experience. This includes providing you and your family with education and training to help you when you leave the hospital (discharge). He or she will meet with you and your family members to discuss your discharge needs and options and help make your transition to the next level of care as smooth as possible. All of our services, including in-hospital medical care, inpatient rehabilitation, day treatment, outpatient and home health, are connected, and care is coordinated from one setting to another. You will be discharged from the Rehab Hospital when you meet any of the following discharge criteria.

  • You meet your inpatient rehabilitation goals or your progress plateaus.

  • You are well enough to be cared for in a less intensive care setting.
  • Your medical needs would be best addressed by WakeMed’s acute care team.
  • You do not consistently participate in three hours of therapy each day.

You may be asked to leave the program if your choices prevent you from making progress in rehab or put you or others at risk.

Financial and Billing Assistance

Your case manager will work with you and your insurance company and will provide assistance, answering any questions you have about your insurance coverage. Most charges — including room and board, medications, therapy, hospital and laboratory services — will appear on one bill. Physician and other professional charges are billed separately. If you have questions about your bill, contact the hospital billing department at 919-350-8359. Or, ask your clinical case manager for assistance.


WakeMed’s Food and Nutrition Services prepares all meals. If you would like to bring in outside food, please discuss it with your nurse ahead of time. Any food that is brought in must be labeled and in a clear container. Family members are welcome to bring their own food and join you during lunch and dinner. The dining schedule is below:

  • Breakfast – Served around 7:30 am
  • Lunch – Served at noon
  • Dinner – Served at 5 pm


Since laundry facilities are not provided on site, family members are responsible for laundering your personal clothing. In cases where families must travel a great distance or have special needs, other arrangements can be made. Please check with your nurse if you need assistance with your laundry.

Your mail and flowers will be delivered to your room each day. Your mail should be addressed:

Rehab Machine


Please bring a list of all current medications with you. Please leave all drugs, sedatives, narcotics, medicated lotions and ointments at home. Your attending physician must prescribe all medications you will use while you are here, and they will be dispensed by our pharmacy. This ensures your medications are coordinated by one health care professional.


WakeMed Health & Hospitals is a tobacco-free facility. This initiative, which supports WakeMed's commitment to the promotion of health, prohibits the use of any tobacco products on all WakeMed campuses, facilities and office space (including parking lots, sidewalks and other outside areas). The tobacco-free policy applies to anyone on the grounds, including employees, volunteers, medical staff, vendors, patients and visitors.


Family members and friends are important members of the care team and are welcome to visit you anytime. However, there may be times when you will be in therapy and are unable to receive visitors. Please talk with your nurse or clinical case manager to determine the best times for you to receive visitors. Children accompanied and supervised by an adult visitor are welcome to visit you.

Rehab Visitor

Your Room

When you arrive, you will be assigned to a room which includes a telephone and television. Many rooms in the Rehab Hospital are semi-private, so you should plan to have the company of a roommate. A limited number of private rooms are available for patients with special needs or whose medical condition may require privacy. Patients in the Neuro Care Unit are accommodated in single rooms.

Overnight Visitors

If you are in a private room, an adult family member may stay overnight with you, if you desire. Each private room is equipped with a sleeper chair or sofa. If you are in a semi-private room, an adult visitor of the same gender is welcome to stay. However, sleeper chairs and sofas are not provided in shared rooms. It is important for pediatric patients (under 18 years old) to have an adult family member with them at all times. If this is a challenge, please speak with your clinical case manager.
