West Paul, MD, PhD, senior vice president & chief quality officer

Dr. Paul heads the WakeMed Center for Patient Safety.  His primary focus is on the analysis, design, development and implementation of improvements in systems, processes and outcomes related to clinical quality, patient safety and accreditation in both ambulatory and inpatient settings. 

He works closely with physicians and leaders to maintain a culture of quality, recognize opportunities to improve outcomes and help implement best practices to continue to achieve outstanding patient care.  

Board-certified in internal medicine, Dr. Paul is an accomplished researcher, author and presenter with 30 years of experience.  His specific research interests include clinical pharmacology, medication use and safety and physician/patient communication and service. Throughout his career, Dr. Paul has received countless teaching awards, and he maintains memberships in several professional medical societies, including the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association.

He received his bachelor's degree in zoology at Duke University and his medical degree at East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine, where he also earned a Ph.D. in pharmacology.  He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

Before joining WakeMed, Dr. Paul served as the medical director of quality at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.
