Orthopaedic Surgery

The WakeMed Orthopaedic team consists of 19 orthopaedics surgeons and 21 advanced practice providers. Our group covers a variety of orthopaedic surgical specialties including trauma, sports, spine, pediatrics, total joint, hand, and foot and ankle. We see a diverse patient population ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics. Our APP’s are team based and treat orthopaedic injuries across the spectrum of care from outpatient to hospital settings.

Hospital coverage includes daily rounds, pre- and post-operative care, Xray interpretation, surgical first assist, fracture reductions, suturing, and orthopaedic trauma evaluation. The outpatient setting consists of office coverage as well as urgent care coverage seeing acute injuries, surgical follow ups, fractures, joint injections and aspirations.

Orthopaedic APP Fellowship Curriculum Overview

The orthopaedic fellowship is a 12-month program and is structured into four, three month clinical rotations covering Trauma, Hand / Foot and Ankle, Sports / Joints and Spine. Each rotation will consist of both inpatient and outpatient components.

Structure and Competencies

The APP fellow will have a designated senior APP who will oversee their day-to-day work on each rotation. Each fellow will become well versed in interpreting x-rays, fracture reductions, performing consults, first assisting, rounding, diagnosing and formulating a plan for optimal orthopaedic care. APP fellows will have the opportunity to attend weekly didactic experiences including grand rounds, fracture conference, hand conference, as well as monthly APP lectures.
