Neurosurgery

At WakeMed, we partner with Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic to perform the latest techniques and surgical treatments for conditions ranging from neck and back disorders to brain and peripheral nerve conditions. Our goal is to help each patient get relief from long-standing pain and restore function from nerve disorders and injuries so that they can enjoy life again.

The neurosurgeons who practice at WakeMed work in collaboration with other physicians, nurses, neuroradiologists and rehabilitation specialists to develop an individualized treatment plan based on each patient’s needs.

These outstanding and experienced surgeons perform delicate and complex surgeries to help patients achieve optimal recovery from their condition or injury. They perform surgery, often using minimally invasive techniques, to correct and repair a variety of neurological conditions.

Conditions We Treat

  • Aneurysms: Surgical clipping and endovascular coiling, performed by a neurosurgeon and WakeMed's team of specialists, are two surgical procedures that can be used to treat a brain aneurysm.
  • Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM): AVM can cause seizures and other problems when they are on the brain and spine. Specialized techniques are used to remove the AVM from the spinal cord or brain. After surgical removal, the condition is considered cured.
  • Back Pain: WakeMed’s neurosurgeons and neurologists collaborate with a team of specialists to develop a treatment plan for people coping with chronic back pain. While most back pain is relieved by medication, rest, heat and physical therapy, sometimes surgery is needed to get relief from the pain and weakness.
  • Brain Tumors: Neurosurgery is the preferred treatment for brain tumors that can be removed without unnecessary neurological damage or medical risk.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:Traditional and minimally-invasive carpal tunnel surgeries are performed by our highly qualified neurosurgeons.
  • Hydrocephalus: This condition occurs when excess fluid builds up in fluid-containing cavities of the brain. Surgical shunting or endoscopic third ventriculostomy are two treatment protocols.
  • Neck Pain:The neck can often be the source of persistent pain. Whether neck pain is caused by a degenerative or nerve disorder, an injury, stress, poor posture or overuse, our goal is to help each patient get relief from long-standing neck pain and to restore function.
  • Spinal Cord Injury: Our neurosurgeons have the skills and experience to expertly perform a wide variety of spinal fusion, decompression, and disc replacement and removal surgeries.
  • Spinal Tumors: Spinal tumors are abnormal growths located either within or surrounding the spinal cord or column. These masses, which often grow very quickly, can be either benign or cancerous. We use our expertise, commitment to excellence, and access to innovative treatments to achieve the best outcomes.
  • Trigeminal Neuralgia: This condition often causes facial pain and nerve injury. Microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery is the preferred treatment.
  • Stroke Program: The WakeMed care team provides the highest standard of care, including diagnosis, prevention and treatment, for patients with stroke.
  • Ulnar Nerve Neuropathy: This condition can cause permanent damage if not treated promptly, including paralysis and loss of feeling in the affected hand or arm.
