Neuropsychology is a sub-specialty of professional psychology that provides diagnostic assessment of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional changes that occur due to neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative or acquired disorders of the brain. Neuropsychological assessment is available with a physician referral for patients with a variety of medical illnesses or when cognitive change or impairment is suspected due to:

Inpatient neuropsychological consultation services are also provided to patients being cared for at WakeMed Raleigh Campus.
If you think you would benefit from a neuropsychological evaluation, speak first with your physician and ask that they write a prescription for the service (helps to assure insurance will consider it a covered benefit). Your physician can send in referral information (see Referrals below) or you can call us directly at 919-350-7878 for more information.
If you think your client or patient would benefit from a neuropsychological evaluation, please complete the Neuropsychology Referral Form and fax it, along with pertinent medical records, to 919-350-7130. We will then contact your patient directly to schedule the appointment, and will provide you with a copy of the evaluation upon completion. Most outpatient appointments are scheduled in the morning. Please arrive about 30 minutes before the appointment time to register. Take all of your regular medicines that morning as prescribed and bring a list of current medications to your appointment. Please also bring copies of any pertinent medical records.
Some reading may be required so if you wear glasses, please bring them to the appointment. In addition, bring a family member with you. The appointment will likely take several hours and if it goes into the afternoon, you will be given a lunch break (please bring a lunch or money to purchase lunch). WakeMed Neuropsychology is the largest and most comprehensive neuropsychology practice in the Triangle area. A full range of adult and pediatric neuropsychological services are provided.
Director Dr. Leach joined WakeMed Neuropsychology in 1995. She is board certified by the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology and a Fellow of the American College of Professional Neuropsychology. Dr. Leach also serves as Program Director of WakeMed's Brain Injury Rehabilitation System (BIRS). She specializes in adult neuropsychology, with special interests in acquired brain injury, cerebrovascular accident, and dementia.
Clinical Neuropsychologist Dr. Brown joined WakeMed Neuropsychology in 2015. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Georgia and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Missouri-Columbia before joining WakeMed. Dr. Brown provides neuropsychological assessment to adult patients with a variety of neurological diagnoses.
Dr. Cohen joined WakeMed Neuropsychology in 2017. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Loyola University Maryland, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sports Medicine Concussion Program. While at UPMC, Dr. Cohen worked with roughly 3,500 athletes, ranging from children to NFL players and Olympians, and developed a passion for helping patients with evaluation and management of concussion. Dr. Cohen also provides neuropsychological assessment to pediatric patients with a variety of neurological diagnoses.
Clinical Neuropsychologist Dr. Kakos joined WakeMed Neuropsychology in 2015. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Kent State University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at the Baltimore VA Medical Center before joining WakeMed. Dr. Kakos provides neuropsychological assessment to adult patients with a variety of neurological diagnoses.p>
Dr. O’Neil joined WakeMed Neuropsychology in 2017. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Central Michigan University after completing an APA approved internship at the Missouri Health Sciences Psychology Consortium at the University of Missouri in Columbia. She subsequently completed an APPCN/APA-accredited post-doctoral fellowship at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan in Detroit. As a clinical neuropsychologist, Dr. O’Neil provides a variety of services within the inpatient rehabilitation hospital and neuropsychological assessment on an outpatient basis to adults with a variety of neurological diagnoses.
Dr. Selena Scott joined WakeMed Neuropsychology in 2018. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Windsor after completing a CPA approved internship at Hamilton Health Sciences with a focus on clinical psychology and clinical neuropsychology. She subsequently completed an APPCN/APA-accredited post-doctoral fellowship at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan in Detroit. As a clinical neuropsychologist, Dr. Scott provides a variety of services within the inpatient rehabilitation and acute care hospitals, as well as neuropsychological assessment on an outpatient basis to children and adults with a variety of neurological diagnoses.
Clinical Neuropsychologist Dr. Wilhelm joined WakeMed Neuropsychology in 1995. She is board certified by the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology and a Fellow of the American College of Professional Neuropsychology. Dr. Wilhelm specializes in adult neuropsychology, with special interests in acquired brain injury, cerebrovascular accident and dementia.
Ms. Bjorling joined WakeMed Neuropsychology in 2007 and has been employed by WakeMed Health & Hospitals since 1986. Ms. Bjorling coordinates outpatient services for the department and can answer questions related to referrals and scheduling.
