What is a WakeMed eVisit?

A WakeMed eVisit is a simple and affordable way to get exceptional medical care from our WakeMed Urgent Care providers using your WakeMed MyChart account – from the convenience of your mobile device or computer from anywhere in NC. Offered exclusively to WakeMed patients, this service is intended to treat a defined set of minor medical issues that our exceptional care team can effectively treat remotely. The current symptoms eligible for eVisit care include: cough, sinus problems, urinary problems, and diarrhea. Our goal is to continue expanding this list over time.

How does a WakeMed eVisit work?

A WakeMed eVisit is as simple as filling out a secure, online questionnaire about your symptoms. You’ll need an internet connection and a WakeMed MyChart account to get started. Once you’re logged into WakeMed MyChart, select “eVisit: Get Care via Questionnaire.” You’ll answer some detailed questions about your current symptoms and a WakeMed Urgent Care provider will review the information and you’ll receive a diagnosis and recommended treatment plan via MyChart within two hours.** If the WakeMed Urgent Care provider reviews the information submitted and is unable to provide a diagnosis through eVisit, you will receive a secure message including their recommendations for next steps. In these cases, you will not be charged for the eVisit.

Who is eligible for a WakeMed eVisit?

In order to qualify for a WakeMed eVisit, you must:

  • Have been a WakeMed patient within the last 18 months (includes all WakeMed hospital and outpatient sites, WakeMed Physician Practice locations, urgent care sites and emergency rooms)
  • Have an active WakeMed MyChart account
  • Be age 18 or older
  • Be located in North Carolina when you submit your eVisit

How do I start an eVisit?

    1. Log into your WakeMed MyChart account at mychart.wakemed.org. From there, select “eVisit: Get Care via Questionnaire.”
    2. Submit your payment method (Note: Your card will not be charged until the provider reviews and completes your eVisit.)
    3. Choose your primary symptom from the list provided and answer a few questions about your symptoms and medical history.
    4. A WakeMed Urgent Care provider will send you a secure message through WakeMed MyChart within two hours** of receiving your eVisit questionnaire.
    5. If the provider recommends a prescription, it will be sent to your preferred pharmacy designated in your MyChart account.

Can I use eVisit for emergency care?

No. If you need emergency care, please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency department.

What conditions can be treated using eVisit?

At this time, you can use eVisit for a defined set of symptoms, including:

  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Sinus Problems
  • Urinary issues, such as a Urinary Tract Infection

Do I need an appointment to use eVisit?

No. eVisits fit your schedule – you can start an eVisit any time.

Can I get a prescription if needed?

Yes. Medications may be prescribed if the provider determines them to be part of your care plan – and any prescriptions will be automatically sent to your pharmacy of choice.

Note: eVisits are intended to treat minor health conditions and therefore, no controlled substances will be prescribed or refilled via an eVisit. Similarly, we are unable to refill a medication prescribed by another provider – even if prescribed at a WakeMed facility or WakeMed Physician Practices office.

How long does an eVisit take?

An eVisit takes about five minutes to complete. Depending on your symptoms, condition and health history, the total number of questions you answer will vary.

Who provides care through an eVisit?

Our exceptional WakeMed Urgent Care care team, which includes board-certified physicians as well as licensed physician assistants and nursed practitioners, are trained to diagnose and treat illnesses through virtual care.

What does eVisit cost?

eVisit costs $35 per visit.

Will my insurance cover eVisit?

Because eVisits are a relatively new way to deliver health care, most insurance companies do not yet cover this service. That’s why WakeMed provides eVisits for a flat fee of $35 – which is oftentimes less than the co-pay you’d pay for an urgent care visit.

How do I pay for my eVisit?

You can pay for your eVisit with a debit or credit card. You will be asked to enter your credit card information at the beginning of your eVisit request. Certain flexible spending accounts (FSA) or health care spending accounts (HSA) may also cover eVisits – check with your plan administrator.

** For eVisits submitted between 9 am and 7 pm, a diagnosis and treatment plan will be sent within 2 hours. For eVisits submitted after 7 pm or before 9 am, you will receive your diagnosis and treatment plan by 10 am on the subsequent business day. Any eVisits submitted on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day or Easter Sunday will be reviewed the following business day by 10 am.
