Patient Care Philosophy
We see a lot of patients who are disabled by a heart condition. It’s very gratifying to know that we can give a patient an operation that will restore their health and allow them to once again do everything they want to do in their life.

Born in Lake Charles, La., Dr. William Killinger joined WakeMed Heart & Vascular Physicians Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery in 1996. He is past chair of the WakeMed Department of Surgery, where he continues to practice both adult cardiac and adult thoracic surgery. Prior to joining WakeMed, Dr. Killinger served as a clinical associate at The Cleveland Clinic, where he completed his fellowships. He also served as chief resident during his time at the University of North Carolina Hospitals and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

As a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Killinger specializes in coronary bypass surgery, valve repair and replacement surgery, repair of conditions of the aorta, lung cancer surgery and device removal , including recalled and infected pacemakers.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Killinger has published numerous scientific articles and has also served as a guest reviewer of the prestigious scientific publication Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He and his wife, Joyce, have two children.
