Biography

With an extensive history of teaching and mentoring fellow surgeons, Dr. Michael Tyner, MD, FASMBS brings his expertise in general, laparoscopy, and minimally invasive surgery to WakeMed Bariatric Specialists of North Carolina.

He was the first in the area to perform laparoscopic colon surgery, laparoscopic hernia surgery, and laparoscopic hiatal hernia repairs. In the early 2000’s, Dr. Tyner helped Dr. Paul Enochs transition open gastric bypass surgeries to the laparoscopic approach, fueling his interest in Bariatric medicine. Dr. Tyner performs laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic gastric bypass, and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy procedures in addition to his advance laparoscopic procedures.

Dr. Tyner has long been a champion of adapting laparoscopic surgical techniques to traditional open surgical procedures. This was fostered by involvement in regional, national, and specialty conferences along with participation in postgraduate courses and mentoring sessions at many university programs. Through these efforts he has become skilled in advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques for the management of disease of the gallbladder and bile duct, the colon, small bowel and the repair of abdominal wall hernias. Dr. Tyner has honed this set of skills by teaching fellow urologists and gynecologists laparoscopy, as it has become the standard of care in these fields of medicine.

Dr. Michael Tyner has matured an expertise in the laparoscopic repair of hiatal hernias. The goal of these efforts has been to cure gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), the leading cause of heartburn. He has been invited to speak on this topic at local universities, teaching conferences and national surgical conferences. Dr. Tyner has studied anti-reflux surgery with world renowned surgeons and today uses his knowledge to teach and mentor surgeons in the most current techniques. Dr. Tyner’s surgical techniques have been adopted by The Mayo Clinic, Northwestern, and USC.

Dr. Tyner graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Biology from Wake Forest University in 1979. While attending school, he was a scholarship athlete for both the track & field and cross country teams. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 1983 and completed his general surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1988. Dr. Tyner was the recipient of The Golden Apple award given for excellence in teaching medical students.

With his children off to college, Dr. Tyner resides in Raleigh with his wife Jackie, a registered nurse who is also an integral member of the BSNC family. For the past five years Dr. Tyner has given back by mentoring surgeons at the National Children’s Hospital in El Salvador.
