Dr. Jon Bruce, MD, FACS, FASMBS is dedicated to providing results-oriented weight loss surgery to every patient. In addition to Bariatrics, Dr. Bruce performs a wide variety of general and advanced laparoscopic procedures.
Dr. Bruce graduated Summa Cum Laude with a double major in Chemistry and Biology from Niagara University in 1989. He minored in Military Sciences and served as the Battalion Commander of ROTC his senior year. Dr. Bruce was awarded the George Catlett Marshall Award and Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for his outstanding leadership in ROTC. He received his medical degree and completed surgery residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Bruce was awarded the Schenck Award as the best resident teacher and served as chief resident his final year. He received additional post-graduate training in advanced laparoscopy, colon, and gastric surgery at the University Institute Louis Pasteur in France and in Hamburg, Germany.
Upon completion of his surgery residency, Dr. Bruce served in the United States Army. He spent three years at the US Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany. While stationed abroad, Dr. Bruce was assigned to the 212th MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), the last of its kind in the US Army. He completed two tours of active duty in the Balkans where he served as a field trauma surgeon. Upon completion of his tour in Heidelberg, Dr. Bruce finished his military service at Fort Hood, Texas where he was honorably discharged. Dr. Bruce was the recipient of the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorius Service Medal, and the NATO Medal, Kososovo Medal, and Army Achievement Medal for each of his tours of active duty.
Dr. Bruce joined the WakeMed family on August 1, 2018 when Bariatric Specialists of NC became WakeMed Bariatric Specialists of NC.
Dr. Bruce resides in Cary with his wife and four children. He is an active member of the community serving as a coach for his son’s football team, a volunteer physician for area sporting events, and continues to support the USO. Outside the office, Dr. Bruce enjoys football, rock and roll, staying physically active, traveling, and spending time with his family and friends.
