Patient Care Philosophy
The patient is always first. As a doctor, if you truly believe that, and you wake up every morning knowing that you will do right by the patient, everything else will fall into place.
Physician Bio

As a board certified interventional cardiologist, Dr. Islam Othman specializes in adult cardiovascular diseases, cardiovascular disease prevention, heart failure management, interventional cardiology, general cardiology and nuclear medicine. His areas of expertise include echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, nuclear imaging, stress imaging, coronary angiography and complex coronary interventions.

A 2015 recipient of the Triangle Business Journal’s prestigious 40 Under 40 award, Dr. Othman leads one of the most successful heart disease programs on the East Coast. He is director of the Complex PCI/ Chronic Total Occlusion (PCI/CTO) Program at WakeMed, where he pioneered new, minimally invasive techniques using state-of-the-art equipment to restore blood flow to completely blocked coronary arteries that otherwise would be deemed too risky or would require open heart surgery.

To date, Dr. Othman has performed the most CTO procedures in the state of North Carolina, with a 97 percent success rate.

Finding Inspiration

Dr. Othman first became inspired to pursue a career in cardiology after his mother had a heart attack and underwent bypass surgery. He witnessed his mother’s cardiologists putting her needs at the top of their priority list and knew the field was where he wanted to be. To this day, Dr. Othman dedicates himself to ensuring his patients know he is a compassionate provider who genuinely cares about their needs and making them feel better.

Cardiovascular Care in the Community

Apart from WakeMed, Dr. Othman is actively involved with the Mariam Clinic, a Raleigh non-profit organization that provides free health care to uninsured individuals, and he serves on community boards to address the needs of the uninsured. Dr. Othman also publicly advocates for prevention of disease through speaking engagements and various community and hospital events.

During any spare time that he has outside of medicine, Dr. Othman loves nothing more than spending time with his wife and children.
