About Me

Dr. Rutherford is an associate professor of surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), an attending physician at WakeMed and a colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, completed his internship and junior residency at UNC-CH and completed his senior residency at New Hanover Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, N.C. A diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and also board certified in critical care, Dr. Rutherford is especially interested in surgical critical care.

From the moment I arrived to check in for my post surgery appointment, the receptionist Paola Flores provided outstanding and pleasant service. It continued with Dr Edmund Rutherford. He was absolutely phenomenal not only with his surgical precision but his aftercare and explanation of the procedure and the importance of the necessary steps to healing. This was the BEST hospital experience and care that I’ve ever received. Both of them should be recognized and awarded for going beyond and above in my opinion. From the moments before I was taken into surgery to now, Dr. Rutherford has been amazing. During hospital stay he came in every day and didn't act rushed, answered questions and talked to me & explained anything that needed to be. He is amazing & his staff. I would recommend him a million times over!!

Dedication and friendliness by all. Very attentive to my needs. Seeing a room full of nurses and anesthesia dollars when I woke up. I expressed my fears about coming out of anesthesia as I had other experiences before. I have chronic back pain and they made sure I was comfortable. A great experience, everyone should be treated so kind especially when having surgery.
