Dr. Brandon Roy is board certified in general surgery, and his clinical interests are advanced laparoscopic treatment of reflux, colon disease and hernias. He specializes in bariatric surgery, particularly adjustable gastric banding, which helps restore extremely overweight patients to more normal weight levels, allowing them to live healthier, fuller and more active lives.

Education and Training

Dr. Roy received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, MN, and completed his residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI, and his fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the University of Alabama -Birmingham. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in genetics and cell biology from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Roy's research has been published in journals such as The American Surgeon. If you need bariatric surgery, Dr. Roy is highly trained to guide you through the process of reducing extra weight, which can lead to increased risk of serious health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and osteoarthritis.

Bariatric surgery is used for persons who, from a medical standpoint, are considered morbidly or massively obese, and for whom other approaches like diet and exercise have not worked. Persons who are considered obese are generally those weighing more than 100 pounds over their ideal body weight, or with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 to 40.

Adjustable Gastric Banding

A laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, commonly referred to as a lap band, is an inflatable silicone device that is placed around the top portion of the stomach. This creates a small pouch, which holds about a half cup of food, rather than the roughly six cups that a normal stomach holds. The pouch fills with food quickly, allowing a patient to feel full sooner and to eat smaller portions, yet also to continue to absorb nutrients from food normally.

As patients lose weight, their bands need to be adjusted for both comfort and effectiveness, which is why they are referred to as adjustable gastric banding.

By working as a partner with Dr. Roy in your personal health planning and care, you will soon be on your way to a healthier, fuller and more satisfying lifestyle.

Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery

Dr. Roy's expertise in advanced laparoscopic treatment of conditions like reflux, hernias and colon disease help his patients recover more quickly because this minimally invasive procedure requires a much smaller incision than the more traditional open surgery. Not everyone is a candidate for this approach, but it's being used in more and more surgeries. Dr. Roy will tailor your treatment to your specific needs to find the best method for you.
