Colorectal Surgery

Colorectal Surgery Procedures

At WakeMed, our surgeons are experienced in the most innovative and effective techniques available to treat colorectal conditions. Whenever possible, we offer our patients minimally invasive and robotic-assisted options to minimize complications and recovery time.

What to Expect from Colorectal Surgery:  Get a general overview of what to expect from colorectal surgery at WakeMed.

We perform these specific procedures:

  • Colon, rectal, and anal resection and removal, often done laparoscopically and/or robotically, using the da Vinci surgery system. These surgeries can be used to treat colon cancer, rectal cancer, anal cancer, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and severe constipation.
  • Colovesical fistula repairfor colovesical fistulas that don’t respond to non-surgical treatment
  • Drainage for abscesses for colorectal abscesses that aren’t healing on their own.
  • Endoanal advancement flap, which is used for complex fistulas, and covers the fistula opening with healthy tissue from the patient
  • Excisional hemorrhoidectomy, for severe hemorrhoids that haven’t responded to other treatments.
  • Fistulectomy, a surgical procedure that completely removes a fistula
  • Fistulotomy, an outpatient procedure that opens up a fistula using an incision
  • Hemorrhoid banding, which uses small rubber bands to treat hemorrhoids
  • LIFT technique (Ligation of intersphincter fistula tract), which is a complex, technique in which the surgeon widens the fistula tract and then removes the infected tissue
  • Rectovaginal fistula closure, which involves creating a plug and repairing any damaged muscles due to the rectovaginal fistula
  • Robotic rectopexy, which can repair rectal prolapse
  • Sacral nerve stimulation for fecal incontinence, in which small needles are placed in the sacral nerves, and are then stimulated with an electrical current
  • Sphincteroplasty, which can repair a damaged anal sphincter and help treat fecal incontinence
  • Sphincterotomy, which involves cutting a small portion of the anal sphincter muscle to repair severe or chronic anal fissures
  • Stapled hemorrhoidectomy, which uses staples to remove internal hemorrhoids
  • Surgical removal of anal warts
  • Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), which can treat early rectal cancer and rectal polyps

In addition, we perform minor procedures in our offices, including hemorrhoidal banding, incision and drainage of perianal abscesses, and incision of thrombosed hemorrhoid.

We also use the latest in diagnostic techniques, including high resolution endoscopy and colonoscopy.
