Physical Rehabilitation

At WakeMed, we offer both inpatient and outpatient pediatric rehabilitation services. In addition to addressing congenital conditions, pediatric rehabilitation can also address acquired injuries, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, orthopeadic injuries, or other medical conditions that result in a significant change in a child’s mobility status or self-care activities.

Pediatric Inpatients

The care of pediatric patients admitted to WakeMed’s Rehabilitation Hospital is supervised by physiatrists -- physicians who are experts in physical medicine and rehabilitation. These physicians work very closely with our pediatric hospitalists to assure the medical as well as the developmental needs of pediatric patients are met during their hospitalization.

A patient's therapy care team includes a pediatric case manager, rehab nurses, therapeutic recreation specialists, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Other pediatric specialty services are available as needed and include pediatric neuropsychology and pediatric psychology services.

The treatment team is dedicated to providing patient and family centered care that promotes optimal recovery and increased independence in an atmosphere that continues to nurture the child’s physical, emotional and psychosocial development.

Pediatric Outpatients

For pediatric patients receiving outpatient rehabilitation therapies, their care is also supervised by a physiatrist who will work closely with the child’s community pediatrician or family doctor. Outpatient services are offered at a variety of locations.

When multiple rehabilitation services are of benefit, the child may be considered for WakeMed’s Day Treatment Program. Some specialized services are available to pediatric patients, including:

  • ENERGIZE! -- a family based healthy lifestyle program for children ages 6-18 to promote healthy eating and exercise
  • Pediatric Neuropsychology – Assessment of cognitive issues resulting from a variety of medical conditions.
