About Me

Dr. Charles Woodham is a board-certified general surgeon with clinical interests in hernia repairs, minimally invasive surgery, trauma and medical education.  He has served his country in the U.S. military and practiced medicine for many years across the country.

Dr. Woodham joined the United States Air Force Reserves in 2002 and went on to pursue his medical degree while also being in the service. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and then completed his general surgery internship and residency while on active duty at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS. He went on to work as a staff general surgeon for the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army with multiple medical units in the US, Europe and Asia.  He joins WakeMed most recently from Burlington Surgical Associates of Cone Health Medical Group in Burlington, NC.

Dr. Woodham believes that being a surgeon is as much about teaching as it is about having the best technical skills. He understands that every patient is also a student and deserves to know as much about their condition as possible in order to decide on the best course of action together.

During his military career, Dr. Woodham earned numerous honorable awards, including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Army Commendation Medal and the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster. He also was awarded the "Best Consultant" award in 2018 from the Emergency Room staff in Burlington.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the Associations of American Physicians & Surgeons. When not at work, Dr. Woodham enjoys spending time with his wife and children. They like to travel and learn he history of the places they visit together.

Each person I interacted with was happy to spend a couple extra minutes with me to ensure that I had everything I needed. This lead to a better outcome than expected.

Dr. Woodham has an excellent sense of humor and I felt he listened and explained what I needed to know. Even answered questions before I could ask them. He’s excellent and I’m thankful that it was he who operated on me.

Dr. Woodham was very professional and kind. He made sure that I was comfortable and ready to go back to work. He made sure to let me know the status of my post op and condition of my wounds. His staff were very friendly and professional as well.

Dr. Woodham is great. This was a post op follow up. Dr. Woodham discussed my surgery and told me to call him if I had any problems. He apologized for it taking so long for me to get in to have my surgery. The first problem was mine. The second was WakeMed North surgical suites were booked so far in advance. Kate from his office stayed in contact with me through MyChart and was helpful in getting me scheduled sooner.

My wife & I prefer that no other surgeon performs his surgery. Dr. Woodham explained in depth the risks & possibilities of my upcoming surgery. He allowed time to answer my wife’s questions (a retired trauma/surgery nurse) & my questions & possible terms. Dr. Woodham is very personable! We feel being under his care, the outcome will be what is meant to be. His office staff are also more than excellent! We have other hospitals closer to us, but with our experience with Wake Med, it’s worth it to drive the difference! Please let him know my wife & I greatly appreciate him!
