RALEIGH, N.C. (March 21, 2012) – WakeMed Health & Hospitals is pleased to announce that its Cary Hospital has been designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center for Excellence® by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

“Earning the ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation signifies our ability to consistently deliver the safest, highest-quality care to bariatric surgery patients,” said David Coulter, senior vice president and administrator of WakeMed Cary Hospital. “It fosters quality improvement in bariatric surgery, and participation has focused our surgical and patient care team on exceeding clinical benchmarks and guidelines. But most importantly, our commitment to excellence improves the health and well-being of our patients.”

Cary Hospital is the only hospital within the WakeMed system to offer bariatric surgery. Guided by expert, board-certified bariatric surgeons, a team of skilled professionals including: a bariatric coordinator, nurses, dietitians and nutritionists, and fitness specialists work together to produce positive patient outcomes.

“Our program provides patients with the tools to succeed, including a personalized fitness plan, and extensive education on making important lifestyle changes,” said Linda Kelly, bariatric program coordinator.
