“With each facility we open, our goal is to increase healthcare options in growing markets where there is a critical mass of households and limited access,” commented Carolyn Knaup, RN, WakeMed vice president of ambulatory services. “Brier Creek is a market that has experienced rapid growth, and we are pleased to bring needed healthcare resources to this community.”

The Brier Creek Healthplex will be WakeMed’s third 24/7 full-service, stand-alone emergency department and will have 12 private treatment rooms. Other stand-alone emergency departments include WakeMed North Healthplex and WakeMed Apex Healthplex. All WakeMed emergency departments are staffed by the same group of board-certified physicians, and all offer access to laboratory and imaging services, including CT and X-ray for both emergency department patients and outpatient visits.

The facility is owned and managed by Duke Realty and sits on 12 acres which allows for future development. The WakeMed Brier Creek Healthplex emergency department will initially employ 74 full time employees and will serve northwest Raleigh, Wake County and the eastern portion of Durham County. The Certificate of Need application for the facility was awarded in September 2009 for $36 million. WakeMed’s total investment in the project is $14 million.

This is WakeMed’s second presence in the Brier Creek market. WakeMed will continue to operate both Brier Creek Medical Park and the Brier Creek Healthplex. Services offered at each location will not be duplicated. WakeMed Brier Creek Medical Park will offer bone density, mammography and physicians offices, including Wake Specialty Physicians Brier Creek Medical Group Internal Medicine.
