WakeMed News Releases

May 6, 2015
RALEIGH, N.C. (May 4, 2015) – The WakeMed Farmers Market at Raleigh Campus opens Tuesday, May 5 for the summer season, offering a wide selection of fresh, North Carolina-grown produce paired with cooking demonstrations, health education events, music and more.

The market will be open Tuesday, May 5 and Tuesday, May 19 from 10am to 2pm – just in time for strawberry season – then every Tuesday from 10 am until 2 pm starting June 2 through August 25.

First launched in June 2014, the WakeMed Raleigh Campus location is one the newest farmers markets in Wake County. The market brings fresh foods to the more than 5,000 employees, 300 volunteers, and thousands of patients and visitors on Raleigh Campus each and every day.

“We educate our patients, their families as well as our own staff about the importance of making healthy food and fitness choices,” said Debbie Laughery, vice president of public relations for WakeMed Health & Hospitals. “The addition of our own farmers market is a great tool for our physicians, nurses, dietitians and educators, and a huge benefit for the patients we treat daily. We’re able to offer our patients, visitors and the community an incredibly convenient and affordable means to access fresh fruits and vegetables.”

The WakeMed Farmers Market also serves southeast Raleigh, where there is a significant need for convenient access to a variety of fresh and healthy foods. Establishing a farmers market for the southeast Raleigh community was especially important to the health system, which has had deep roots in the area since 1961.

“WakeMed exists for the health of the community, and we want to help make finding fresh foods a little easier for the communities we serve, especially our neighbors,” added Donald Gintzig, WakeMed president and CEO.

The market is held at the hospital’s outdoor courtyard – located just through the Main Visitor’s Entrance – off New Bern Avenue. Free parking is available in the P1 parking deck for market patrons.

The market will accept EBT cards as well as debit and credit cards this season. WakeMed will also offer 2 for 1 Market Match vouchers while funding lasts for those who are receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The Market Match program makes it easier for local families to eat healthier, in collaboration with area farmers markets.
