WakeMed News Releases

October 11, 2013
HARNETT COUNTY, N.C. (October 11, 2013) - Harnett Health is pleased to announce a significant new benefit from the partnership with WakeMed Health & Hospitals. Adults needing to be admitted at Harnett Health's two hospitals, Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn and Central Harnett Hospital in Lillington, now have the option of being admitted by and cared for by WakeMed hospitalists. Harnett Health contracted with WakeMed to provide the 24/7 hospitalist service, led by a team of WakeMed board-certified physicians who specialize in caring for hospitalized patients.

In today's healthcare, a new specialty in medicine has evolved called hospitalists, hospital-based physicians who focus on the management of adult inpatients. Typically, the family physician is busy seeing patients in their practice and may choose to refer patients to the hospitalists if they are admitted. An admitted patient may also be treated by a hospitalist in the event he or she does not have a primary care physician. The benefit of a hospitalist service to the patient is the availability of a specialized physician anytime their care requires immediate attention.

Through the Harnett Health Hospitalist Program, WakeMed hospitalists will work closely with community physicians to ensure patient care is well coordinated with any physician who refers a patient to be admitted.

Dr. Brad Butler, a family physician with Angier Medical Services, noted, "Utilizing the WakeMed hospitalists has been a tremendously positive experience for my patients who have been admitted at Betsy Johnson in Dunn or at Central Harnett in Lillington."

WakeMed will continue to add hospitalists to support the program as inpatient volumes and emergency room volumes grow at both hospitals.

"The plan to offer hospitalist services with WakeMed was under development for more than a year. We implemented this program from day one at Central Harnett Hospital, and we are pleased to now provide these specialty services and physicians at Betsy Johnson Hospital," said Harnett Health Vice President of Medical Affairs, Wallace Horne, MD, MMM who oversees the new program at Harnett Health and was instrumental in the growth of this service.

"WakeMed is honored to lead an outstanding team of hospitalists to work alongside both the Betsy Johnson Hospital and Central Harnett Hospital teams to care for adults from Harnett County and surrounding communities," added Tres Pittman, MD, medical director of WakeMed's Hospitalist Program. "This partnership helps ensure local residents can stay close to home and receive high-quality care anytime they need it."

The hospitalists will work primarily at Betsy Johnson and Central Harnett Hospitals but will also rotate at WakeMed Raleigh Campus and WakeMed Cary Hospital. As part of the Hospitalist Program at Harnett Health, in addition to caring for adult inpatients, the WakeMed hospitalists provide on-site emergency department consultations as well as telephone consultations with community healthcare providers.

Harnett Health CEO, Ken Bryan, stated, "The Harnett Health Board of Trustees was committed to creating a high-quality hospitalist program and chose WakeMed hospitalists because of their extensive expertise in caring for patients with a wide range of serious illnesses and injuries. We are pleased to bring that expertise to patients right here at Harnett Health."
