February 4, 2013 Marks Five Years of Enhanced Patient Care in Western Wake County

Apex, N.C. (February 1, 2013) – Five years ago, WakeMed Apex Healthplex emergency department opened its doors to the residents of Apex and western Wake County, bringing additional convenient, accessible health care resources to these communities. February 4, 2013 marks the facility’s official five-year anniversary, and Apex Healthplex continues to exceed expectations and grow in response to the area’s burgeoning population.

During its first fiscal year in 2009 the emergency department treated 9,342 patients. In 2012 alone, 19,976 patients received care at Apex Healthplex emergency department, close to a 50 percent increase in patient volume in just five years. To date, the facility has:
• Treated 90,181 emergency department patients
o On average, 57 ED patients are seen each day
• Performed 79,393 total imaging studies
o 55,599 for outpatients
o 23,794 for emergency department patients
• Performed 40,046 emergency department and outpatient lab tests from October 2011 through December 2012

WakeMed Apex Healthplex emergency department consistently earns high marks for patient satisfaction. In fact, Professional Research Consultants (PRC) data, which tracks patient’s perceptions of the care they received in WakeMed’s in- and outpatient settings across the system, ranks the WakeMed Apex Healthplex emergency department as providing 5-star care. This 5-star award is the highest annual award bestowed from PRC. Winners are determined by comparing results to other PRC healthcare clients across the country.

Located near downtown Apex, WakeMed Apex Healthplex features a 24/7, full-service emergency department for both kids and adults, comprehensive diagnostic imaging and lab services that range from general X-ray to advanced CT scans and an on-site laboratory for prompt test results. This emergency department is the third free-standing emergency department in Wake County. Similar free-standing WakeMed emergency departments serve the North Raleigh, Brier Creek and soon-to-be Garner communities. The site also features an open bore MRI, 12 private treatment beds, two private triage rooms and state-of-the-art monitoring.

The WakeMed Apex emergency department is staffed by board-certified emergency medicine physicians. It is supported by WakeMed Mobile Critical Care Services ground and air transport, WakeMed Cary Hospital and Wake County’s only Level I trauma center at WakeMed Raleigh Campus.

Apex is also home to Wake Specialty Physicians – Apex Medical Group. Experienced family medicine physicians Orlando Conty, MD, and Ragini Madan, MD, offer a comprehensive range of family medicine services, specializing in adults and adolescents ages six and up. The practice is certified as a Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance.
