Sen. Richard Burr to Observe WakeMed and Hospira’s Latest Efforts to Combat Health Care-Associated Infections - Archived
Demonstration to take place in the WakeMed Center for Innovative Learning
RALEIGH, N.C.—August 8, 2011—On Wednesday, August 10, 2011, Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) will join WakeMed Health & Hospitals and clinical technology provider Hospira, Inc., to learn how technology can be leveraged in the fight against health care-associated infections (HAIs). The demonstration will be held in WakeMed’s Center for Innovative Learning, a regional center designed to facilitate realistic multi-disciplinary clinical training and education.
The visit will showcase Hospira’s TheraDocTM Clinical Surveillance System, a software system that alerts care providers in real time to health care-associated infections, anti-microbial resistance, infections and other diseases of public health concern. Identifying these patients early can help prevent the spread of infection or disease within the hospital, resulting in better outcomes for patients and a significantly lower cost of care. In the United States an estimated 1.7 million patients develop an HAI each year, and 99,000 die as a result, adding $28-33 billion in health care costs annually.
