Hello, my name is Tom Gough and I’m WakeMed’s Senior Vice President & Administrator of Community Hospitals. That means I have the incredible opportunity to work with and for the community to make sure Cary Hospital is the best place in the region to meet the growing healthcare needs of you and your neighbors.
Like much of the Triangle, Cary and its surrounding areas continue to grow by leaps and bounds. It’s an exciting time to lead Cary Hospital as we keep pace with this growth – bringing new services, specialties and innovations in healthcare to you – our valued community.
It’s all part of our commitment to expanding the scope and complexity of services that we can deliver right here at your local hospital. Here’s an overview of what’s new and next for Cary Hospital.
WakeMed Cary Hospital earned its Level III Trauma Center Designation from the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (NCOEMS). Aside from the WakeMed Raleigh Campus, Cary Hospital is the only other designated trauma center in Wake County and in some neighboring counties, and one of only 17 in the state.
To be a designated trauma center means Cary Hospital has a proven track record of its ability to treat trauma and the data to demonstrate the ability to handle complex emergency cases with all the protocols, equipment and highly-trained staff to do so.
Opened in partnership with community physicians, Cary Hospital’s Advanced GI Center offers specialty treatment for acid reflux, swallowing difficulties, polyps, Crohn’s disease, cancers and a host of additional gastrointestinal and digestive disorders.
Building on WakeMed’s leadership in Heart & Vascular services, Cary Hospital is now offering elective percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI, otherwise known as coronary angioplasty).
This service, along with advanced heart failure support, is due in part to our Heart Care Plus+ collaboration with Duke Health. Similarly, we’ve welcomed several new vascular surgeons to our Medical Staff who are now offering advanced vascular procedures and screening capabilities here in Cary. This allows our patients to get the advanced cardiovascular care they need right here, close to home.
We recently welcomed a new urogynecologist to our Medical Staff and opened a dedicated Urogynecology office here in Cary. Dr. Katherine Armstrong provides a wide range of pelvic health services, including conservative treatments for urinary incontinence all the way to major reconstructive surgery for pelvic floor disorders.
We also offer pelvic health rehab services at our Outpatient Specialty Rehab department located in Cary Hospital.
Construction is underway on a major hospital expansion, which will add two new floors and an operating room. Scheduled to open in the spring of 2021, the expanded space will include 40 new patient rooms designed specifically for those recovering from surgery, or being treated for complex illness or injury. The expansion will also add new clinical support space so we can continue to grow our programs and services in the coming years.
You have probably noticed the Medical Park of Cary next to Cary Hospital is undergoing a major redevelopment, too. Medical office buildings were torn down this past summer by its owners Healthcare Trust of America in order to rebuild a new, state-of-the-art, five-story medical office building and parking deck.
WakeMed will remain the primary tenant of this building, which is slated to open Summer 2020. Another medical office building is under development across Kildaire Farm Road, which will also allow us to bring even more new physicians’ offices and specialties to the Southwestern Wake community.
While construction is underway on this new Medical Office Building, our WakeMed Physician Practices are still in the Medical Park. You can find WakeMed Urgent Care, Primary Care, Urology and Wake Orthopaedics in Building 222. WakeMed Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Thoracic Surgery offices are found in Building 300.
And, we’ve made parking easier for our patients in Building 222 during construction. From now to April 2020, we are offering free valet parking to patients to help them have one less worry when coming to our offices. Just look for the Valet attendant’s podium near the patient entrance of Building 222 and they will be glad to park your car.

Thank you for reading and connecting with us. We look forward to keeping you healthy and happy, right here in southwestern Wake County.
