You may have heard that the American Heart Association recently made a change to blood pressure guidelines. This important change is the first in 14 years and reflects the results of several long-term studies (including the SPRINT study) which show that there are lower rates of cardiovascular events when blood pressure is controlled to lower levels.
Here are a few things you can do today to help lower your blood pressure:
Prepare meals at home when possible. Flavor foods with herbs, spices, lemon, lime or garlic, and limit all salt shakers (including sea salt).
Aim for 5-9 servings of fruits/vegetables per day. Be sure to include beans, (unsalted) nuts, seeds and fish.
Take 5 minutes to relax. Try imagery, deep breathing or progressive relaxation. This article has some great tips for progressive muscle relaxation.
Want to learn more about the new guidelines? Check out the American Heart Association’s article on Understanding Blood Pressure Readings. We’re also including a chart to help you know what healthy blood pressure looks like vs. not.
