This week, WakeMed Cary Hospital celebrates a significant milestone in its history – its 25th Anniversary since opening on December 16, 1991.
Originally known as Western Wake Medical Center, the facility opened with 80 beds nearly 10 years after WakeMed first sought permission to build the hospital in Cary.
WakeMed (then called Wake Medical Center) underwent court battles between Humana, Inc., who also wanted to build a hospital in Cary, and facility design changes with increased construction costs once the project got underway. In the end, the facility opened and replaced the former Western Wake Hospital in Apex.

Today, Cary Hospital has nearly doubled in size and has 156 beds, 1,135 employees and a medical staff of 810 members. The scope of services has also expanded providing much needed health care services to not only Cary, but the growing communities of Apex, Holly Springs, Morrisville and Fuquay-Varina.
