This is a shout-out to our Mobile Critical Care team that recently competed in the CAE Cup, which is a critical care skills competition held in Seattle, Wa. during the annual Air Medical Transport Conference. The WakeMed Mobile Critical Care team of Derek Bailey, EMT-P, and Sandra Terry, RN, were one of ten teams selected from the U.S. and Canada to compete.
Bailey commented, “The CAE Cup allows paramedics and nurses to train for a variety of situations that will challenge their team’s knowledge and skill set. Many hours of preparation go into training for the competition. These hours of training translate into better preparation for not only the CAE Cup but also for patients that we care for each and every day.”
On the first day of the competition, teams compete in two scenarios: one adult and one pediatric, with high-fidelity simulation mannequins. Each scenario lasts 20 minutes (4 minutes to prep in a holding area after receiving “the call” and then 16 minutes to work the scenario). The second day, the four top scoring teams compete against each other.
Bailey continued, “It was a great honor to participate in the CAE Cup, and we couldn’t have done it without the training, encouragement, and support of Dr. Graham Snyder and Amar Patel from the WakeMed Center for Innovative Learning and Dr. Brendan Berry, medical director of WakeMed Mobile Critical Care. We look forward to our next competition.”
