Dr. Sara Rooker is board certified in Family Medicine, and sees patients age 12 and up. Her clinical interests include preventive medicine, chronic disease management, and women's health. This family practice doctor feels very much at home in a healthcare setting, having started her medical career as a candy striper when she was just 14 years old. She trained as a certified nursing assistant at age 16, and worked part-time at the hospital until she graduated from high school.

As a busy working mom herself, she knows how important it is to take good care of herself, and is dedicated to spreading that word at home and abroad, including traveling as part of her church's mission groups to the Dominican Republic.

Education and Training

Dr. Rooker received her medical degree from the East Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville, NC. She completed her residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV, and worked as a licensed physical therapist for 14 years before earning her medical degree. Prior to joining Brier Creek Medical Group, Dr. Rooker practiced family medicine for eight years in the Triangle area.

Dr. Rooker has received the Family Medicine Clerkship Teaching Award. She is also a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians.

Family Medicine

This medical specialty allows Dr. Rooker to develop a long-term, caring relationship with you and your family, and to take care of your physical, emotional and mental health needs. As a primary care doctor, she treats you through all stages of life, completing routine physical examinations and providing annual vaccinations or boosters, as needed. She also can diagnose a wide range of problems, and will find you a trusted specialist if you should need one.

What are some women's health issues?

Dr. Rooker treats entire families (age 12 and up), men and women, boys and girls. But she has a special interest in women's health issues, and can counsel you on special needs ranging from menstrual cycle issues (like bleeding between periods or menopause) to family planning; yeast or other vaginal, uterine or bladder infections; and breast health, whether you are a nursing mom or need a routine mammogram. Women have certain nutrition needs, especially making sure you get enough iron to replace that lost in menstruation, and calcium, to ward off dangers of osteoporosis. And while stress can and does affect both sexes, Dr. Rooker is sensitive to how stress particularly affects today's women, who often are juggling jobs and running homes, and may be taking care of children and elderly parents at the same time.

Visit Dr. Rooker to find out what a difference it can make to have a family physician in your life, who cares for you at all stages and for many different needs.
