About The WakeMed Campus Police & Public Safety Department

The WakeMed Campus Police Department is a State Certified Campus Police Department with full police authority on WakeMed Campuses and any adjacent city streets. The department consists of approximately 50 sworn officers and 30 non-sworn officers and staff.

The WakeMed Campus Police has 3 Operations Captains that are in charge of the Raleigh Campus; Cary Hospital and Apex Healthplex; and the North Healthplex and satellite offices. With over 26 locations to cover, the WakeMed Campus Police Department is a progressively growing department. The Squads work permanent shifts (day or night) using a modified DuPont schedule and are run by a Lieutenant and Squad Sergeant.

The Raleigh Campus also has as a non-sworn Public Safety Operations team that is run by a Public Safety Lieutenant and Sergeant. All Officers have the ability to move through the ranks in management roles, as well as opportunities to develop themselves in a career ladder (First Class Officer, Senior Officer, and Master Officer).

The Administrative Division consists of the System-wide staff; the Administrative Captain, First Sergeant Training Coordinator/Educator, Investigator, Locksmith, and Access Control Specialist.

WMCP has a Police Tactical team that consists of specially trained officers in Special Weapons and Tactics. This team is primarily assigned to assist in force protection of the CapRAC State Medical Assistance Team (SMAT) deployments as well as provide expertise in high risk rapid deployment situations at any of the System Campuses. This team traveled to Mississippi and protected the NC SMAT field Hospital for Hurricane Katrina relief in 2005.

General Requirements for Sworn Police Officers:

  • Must have successfully completed North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training within one year of hire or have prior law enforcement experience
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid North Carolina Driver License or be able to obtain one upon hiring
  • Must have a good criminal/driving record
  • Must be in good physical condition

General Requirements for Public Safety (Security) Officers and Telecommunicators:

  • Must be at least 20 years of age
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid North Carolina Driver License or be able to obtain one upon hiring
  • Must have a good criminal/driving record
  • Must be physically able to certify with ASAP baton, pepper spray, handcuffs, and X-26 Taser (telecommunicators excluded)
  • Two years of experience with the general public or prior security/law enforcement experience preferred.
