Temporary Relocation of 14 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Beds, Starting July 26
On Monday, July 26, 14 beds from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will be temporarily relocated to the old Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) location on 4C. This move is to accommodate construction of the hallway connecting 4E to 4A, and the project is expected to take two months to complete. Once construction is complete, the hallway connecting 4A to 4E will be a restricted access hallway.

UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage Contract Termination
WakeMed's contract with UnitedHealthcare's Medicare Advantage network will end on August 15, 2010, marking the end of our three-year contract for the following UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans: Secure Horizons (HMO, PPO & POS plans); AARP Medicare Complete (HMO, PPO & POS plans) and Evercare (HMO, PPO & POS plans). Effective August 15, WakeMed, WakeMed Faculty Physicians, Wake Specialty Physicians and WakeMed Home Health will only accept Medicare Advantage plans for which we are under contract, which will include none of the above. In an emergency, patients can seek care at the closest hospital as emergency care is covered by these plans even if the hospital no longer has a contract. WakeMed will continue to accept traditional Medicare (www.medicare.gov). For a list of accepted insurance plans, visit www.wakemed.org under For Our Patients, then Managed Care Contracts. Or call 350-CARE (2273).

WakeMed North Outpatient Rehab to Specialize in Orthopaedic & Sports Rehab
Effective August 2, 2010, the WakeMed North Outpatient Rehabilitation site will specialize in orthopaedic and sports rehabilitation. As they transition to this new treatment model, staff will contact patients and referral sources about any changes that may impact their care.  As part of the transition, staff at the North location will no longer specialize in neurological rehabilitation or speech language services. Treatment for patients with neurological or speech/language issues will be provided at WakeMed Wake Forest Road Outpatient Rehab Center. With questions or concerns, contact Brent Selman, manager of Outpatient Rehab Services, at ext. 01485.

This summer, WakeMed is sponsoring the Movies By Moonlight program at Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary.  Thursday evenings through August will feature a combination of blockbuster hits and memorable classics from Hollywood.  For only $3 for adults (kids 12 and under are free) and picnic baskets allowed, it is hard to find a cheaper night out on the town.  A portion of the proceeds benefits the WakeMed Foundation's Just For Kids Kampaign.

Raleigh Campus Switching from DIRECTV to Time Warner Cable
This switch will begin on Monday July 26, at 8 am. Engineering anticipates the project will take about two days to complete. During this time, some outages may occur. If an outage lasts for more than 30 minutes, please contact Engineering at ext. 05111. Some patients may also temporarily lose access to the TIGR system, which will reside on channels 76 through 91 once the switch is complete. Time Warner Cable programming will reside on channels 2 through 74. The Raleigh Campus Patient Information Guide has been revised to reflect the new channel lineup. As a result of this upgrade, patients will have access to many more TV channels.  With questions, please contact Matt McCain at mmccain@wakemed.org or ext. 05445.

Information Services Needs Your Help to Encrypt All Laptops & Other Mobile Devices
Due to HIPAA and the HITECH act, WakeMed is required to encrypt all data on mobile devices. While IS has encrypted many laptop hard drives with minimal disruption to staff, around 50 laptops are still outstanding. Many are in your homes, and IS needs you to bring them in.  Any laptop not encrypted by July 30, 2010, will be removed from the network.

Trauma Services Administrative Team Update
This summer, the Trauma Services program is pleased to welcome Rehab Services executive director Elaine Rohlik, MSW, to its administrative team, where she will partner with Dr. Osi Udekwu, MBA/MHA, and Sylvia Scholl, MSN, RN, in managing the Trauma Services program while continuing to maintain her Rehab responsibilities. Similarly, Dr. Udekwu's roles as medical director for WakeMed's Trauma Services program and as director for the WakeMed Faculty Physicians - Trauma/General Surgery and Wake Specialty Physicians - General Surgery practices will remain unchanged.

In her new role, Elaine will assist with Trauma regulations and accreditation, performance improvement and peer review, operating and capital budgets, injury prevention and quality of care standards. This transition is part of a succession plan in the anticipation of Sylvia's forthcoming retirement, at which time a new, clinically-focused role will be established to help guide the Trauma program's clinical, performance improvement and coordination efforts. Thank you to Elaine for taking on these new responsibilities during a time of transition, and please join us in welcoming her to this role.
