Clinical Pastoral Education Program

WakeMed has been privileged to be an integral part of the educational journey of area clergy, seminarians, and lay persons across diverse faith traditions.

The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program at WakeMed Health & Hospitals has been accredited since 1975 by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) — the Standard for Spiritual Care and Education. WakeMed offers Level I and Level II CPE programs. The mission of our CPE program is to provide experiential and process orientated education to a diverse group of theological students, clergy and laypersons in accordance with ACPE Standards.

Clinical Pastoral Education is an interfaith professional education for ministry. It brings theological students, ministers, and qualified laity into supervised encounters with people in crisis. Through intense involvement with persons in need of spiritual care along with feedback from peers and educators, students gain a new understanding of ministry and develop new awareness of themselves and the needs of others. They develop skills in interpersonal and inter-professional relationships using the interdisciplinary team process of helping others, attending educational seminars, and reviewing written reports.
