Would Care, Would Healing, WakeMed Rehab HospitalWakeMed Raleigh Campus offers patients a comprehensive Outpatient Wound Care (or wound healing) service.

Designed to help treat hard-to-heal wounds, this service offers patients a customized treatment plan tailored to meet individual needs.

WakeMed Wound Care offers four specialty clinics in the wound care facility:

  • General surgery
  • Plastic surgery
  • Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery
  • Vascular surgery

Numerous physicians from these various specialties work with the Wound Care team, allowing WakeMed to offer comprehensive care for a wide variety of patient populations.

This coordinated care is provided by a multidisciplinary team of experts including general, vascular and plastic surgeons, podiatrists, certified wound care specialists and nurses, physical therapists, orthotists, registered dietitians, hyperbaric technicians, and physicians who are specialty trained in hyperbaric medicine.

WakeMed Wound Care also offers Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy in its monoplace hyperbaric chamber.  A few of the conditions that can be treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy include traumatic wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, other wounds related to circulation impairments, compromised skin grafts and flaps, serious cuts, internal radiation injuries and severe Infections.

In the hyperbaric chamber, patients breathe 100 percent oxygen in an enclosed pressurized system for sessions of 90-120 minutes depending upon the condition being treated.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps to increase the oxygen levels in the blood stream, allowing damaged tissues to regenerate and heal faster. During therapy the patient has a clear view of their surroundings, is in constant communication with the hyperbaric specialist and can nap or watch television.

As the medical director for WakeMed Rehabilitation Services, Pat O'Brien, MD, (Carolina Rehabilitative and Surgical Associates) provides medical management and oversight for the program.

WakeMed Wound Care is located on the first floor of WakeMed Raleigh Campus, across from Administration and next to Conference Dining.
