At WakeMed, we understand the physical, social and emotional challenges that patients face when they’ve experienced a lower limb amputation. We are here to serve patients and families from surgery through rehabilitation and beyond. Our job is to make sure that patients leave WakeMed with a full understanding of how to adjust to their physical change while learning to embrace and enjoy life again.

Our team approach to care – from the acute hospital stay to the inpatient rehab program and outpatient therapy, our programs are structured to work with patients on an individual basis to ensure that they get optimal medical, emotional and spiritual care and support. Patient- and family-centered care means that they are the center of that team, and we work with them to develop realistic expectations and to set new goals in life. Because we understand and respect that each patient has unique needs, WakeMed’s specialized Amputee Program is designed to fulfill the needs of each patient experiencing a lower limb amputation at each phase of recovery.

WakeMed is home to a Level 1 Trauma Center. Because of this, WakeMed’s Amputee Program offers comprehensive care unmatched by other facilities.
