Our Expert Surgeons & Providers
J. Duncan Phillips, MD
Learn more about Dr. Hoover's work to assist children with chest wall deformities.
J. Duncan Phillips, MD, leads these services as Surgeon-in-Chief and Director of Pediatric Surgery for WakeMed Children' s Hospital. His expertise and experience greatly enhance access to pediatric surgical services for the children in Wake County.
Dr. Phillips is joined by two other talented surgeons, Dr. George Wadie and Dr. J. David Hoover, who see patients in private practice in Raleigh, north Raleigh and Cary at our three WakeMed Physician Practices locations. Dr. Hoover also serves as director of the Duke Children's & WakeMed Children's Specialty Services Collaborative.
Pediatric nurse practitioner Julie Torsone, CPNP, works with the team of surgeons to provide pre- and post-operative care for pediatric surgical patients.
Our surgeons specialize in minimally-invasive surgical procedures and use laparoscopy and thoracoscopy techniques. At WakeMed, about one-third of surgeries are performed using this technology.
Our Children's Surgical Services Team
WakeMed Children's Hospital is among a select few in the United States to have three pediatric anesthesiologists and four fellow-trained pediatric radiologists on staff. They are experienced in supporting pediatric patients during highly specialized, intricate surgeries.
Our surgical services team also includes child life specialists and rehab specialists. The child life specialists work with children in both outpatient and inpatient surgery to help calm their fears and anxieties regarding upcoming procedures.
A team of pediatric rehabilitation therapists work specifically in the Children's Hospital to help patients recover from surgical procedures and prepare for everyday life once discharged.
Outpatient surgical services are also available at WakeMed Cary Hospital and WakeMed North Healthplex in north Raleigh.
