Children's Hospital
The Pediatric Unit at WakeMed Children's Hospital isn't your typical hospital ward. It feels more like an amusement park than a place where kids get well.
Brightly colored walls, a huge fish tank, a water wall and a visitor lobby with computer games make this a unique place for kids.
The 25 new inpatient rooms and 12 observation rooms are kid-friendly and nearly 60 percent larger than our previous pediatric rooms.
Each room is private, with the exception of two sibling suites, and is equipped with a full bathroom, a fold-out couch for parents, and either a glider or recliner to accommodate family members.
The unit also has a Playroom with fun toys, books and activities for our younger patients, and a Teen Room that features a Wii, Playstation and computer.
These rooms are staffed by our child life specialists, specially trained and certified individuals who help make children feel more comfortable during their hospital stay.

Usually, a child life specialist will visit your child's room and talk with you shortly after admission. Child life specialists provide parents and kids with coping skills during hospitalization, explaining procedures, and assisting you in identifying ways you can help your child during their time at WakeMed.
Recently renovated and expanded, the cheerfully decorated Pediatric Unit is located next to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and features a sunny playroom with a castle mural, salt-water aquarium and an outdoor roof-top play area.
Focused on family-centered care, we are committed to meeting the individual needs of each child and family we serve.
Of course, it's our team of specially trained health care professionals who provide superior care that set us apart. Meet the Pediatric Hospitalists and Intensivists who provide outstanding care to patients in the inpatient unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
