Children's Hospital
The Pediatric Unit at WakeMed Children's Hospital isn't your typical hospital unit. Bright colors, a large fish tank, a water wall and a visitor lobby with computer games make this a unique place for kids.
The 25 inpatient rooms and 12 observation rooms are kid-friendly and nearly 60 percent larger than our pediatric rooms of the past. Plus, each private room is equipped with a full bathroom, fold-out couch, and a glider or recliner to accommodate family members.
Recently renovated and expanded, the hospital's cheerfully decorated Pediatric Unit is located next to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and features a sunny playroom with a castle mural, salt-water aquarium and an outdoor roof-top play area.

The unit's playroom offers toys, books and activities for younger patients, and a dedicated Teen Room features a Wii, Playstation and computer for older patients. These rooms are staffed by our child life specialists, specially trained and certified professionals who help make children feel more comfortable during their hospital stay. Usually, a child life specialist will visit your child's room shortly after admission. Child life specialists provide parents and kids with coping skills during hospitalization, explaining procedures and giving other advice.
But of course, it's our team of specially trained health care professionals that sets us apart. Meet our Pediatric Hospitalists and Intensivists who provide outstanding care to patients in the inpatient unit and PICU.
