The Emergency Department
We understand that experiencing an accident that involves spinal cord injury is both physically and mentally traumatic. With this in mind, our team of experts has designed a precise plan of care that includes specialized protocols. The WakeMed Spinal Cord Injury Program team immediately activates the plan upon a patient's arrival in the emergency department. Once the plan is activated, team members are with patients and their families throughout their stay.
The Spinal Cord Injury Unit
WakeMed's dedicated Spinal Cord Injury Unit is a part of the 98-bed WakeMed Rehabilitation Hospital on the Raleigh Campus. There are 26 beds in the WakeMed Spinal Cord Injury Unit. All the patient rooms are private as a special measure to enhance treatment and support the healing process.
WakeMed's focus on patient and family centered care is evident in patient rooms, where fold-out couches for sleep and work are available. Our patient and family centered care focus is also evident in Spinal Cord Injury Unit nurses, therapists, case managers and support staff, who are committed to the specialized care patients with spinal cord injuries need.
Fitness/therapy equipment is housed on the same floor as patient rooms. An area for patients and families to eat meals and use their computers is located close to the fitness room.
