Before Surgery

You must follow these guidelines as you prepare for surgery:

Outpatients Only

  • Arrange for an adult to drive you home after your procedure. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home following anesthesia. If you plan to go home in a taxi, you must have a responsible adult accompany you.
  • Arrange for an adult to stay with you at your home for 24 hours after your surgery.

All Patients

  • If you take blood thinning medications (i.e. aspirin, Plavix, Effient, Ticlid, Coumadin or Lovenox), notify your surgeon and do not stop these medications without the approval of the physician who prescribed them.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages or consume illegal/ recreational drugs for 24 hours prior to your surgery.
  • Call your surgeon prior to surgery if you have a cold, flu, fever or other illness.
  • The night before your surgery, do not eat or drink anything between midnight and the time of your surgery, unless approved by the anesthesiologist. This includes water, juice, coffee, chewing gum, chewing tobacco, breath mints and alcohol.

If by accident you eat or drink something after midnight, it is critical to your safety that you alert the preoperative nurse and anesthesia staff before your surgery.

You may brush your teeth the morning of surgery, but do not swallow any water.
