Care that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnerships among providers, patients and families is at the heart of WakeMed’s care delivery system – Patient and Family Centered Care. It is based on the philosophy that outcomes and satisfaction are more positive when patients and their families are active participants in care.

At WakeMed, nurses are leading efforts to integrate Patient & Family Centered Care system-wide – in clinical and non-clinical departments alike. WakeMed’s across-the-board improved Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores exemplify our ongoing success.

Nurses attribute upward shifts in patient satisfaction to their dynamic communication bundle that includes white boards, hourly rounding, bedside reporting and huddles.

Investigating Patient & Family Focused Best Practices

Cultivating Nursing Leaders through Investigation
WakeMed Cary Hospital and WakeMed Raleigh Campus are two of just seven hospitals in North Carolina chosen to participate in the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) 16-month Clinical Scene Investigator (CSI) Academy. Our two teams of nurse leaders-in-training work directly with WakeMed Nursing administrators and national AACN faculty members to investigate and introduce best practices that are both patient and family centered.
