Questions to Ask

Quality Questions

While at WakeMed, if you ever have a question or a concern, or if you don't understand something, just ask.  Your health is too important for you to worry about being embarrassed if you don't understand something your doctor, nurse or other health care professional tells you.

If at any time you have any questions or concerns about your care, the following resources are available to you:

Before taking medicine, having a procedure or surgery, it is important to know:

  • Who will be taking care of you
  • What your diagnosis is
  • What medical tests, procedures and medications are in your treatment plan
  • What tests, procedures or medications are for
  • What specialized training and experience your health care provider has
  • How long the treatment will last
  • How you should feel after the treatment
  • What resources, education material or support groups your doctor recommends for you to
    learn about your condition

Write Down Questions
It is important to write down important facts your doctor tells you so that you can look for additional information later. Also, write down any additional questions you want to ask your health care provider so you do not forget the next time they visit your room.

Second Opinion
You and your health care provider should agree on exactly what will be done during each step of your care. Remember, you are part of the health care team. If you are unsure about the nature of your illness and the best treatment, don't be afraid to seek a second opinion. The more information you have about the options available to you, the more confident you will be in the health care decisions you make.
