Valerie J. De Maio, MD, MSc, FACEP, (Email Valerie J. De Maio) is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and clinical epidemiologist with a focus on prehospital care, particularly resuscitation and trauma. She is the founding Director of WakeMed’s CRU, Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and works clinically in the WakeMed Emergency Departments with Wake Emergency Physicians, PA. Her involvement in research spans almost two decades and includes a Master of Science degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Community Medicine from the University of Ottawa, Canada. Dr. De Maio graduated medical school at the University of Calgary, Canada and completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. De Maio has a strong interest in identification of effective training and management strategies for emergent out-of-hospital care, specifically as it pertains to pediatric patients.

Jefferson G. ( Jeff ) Williams, MD, MPH, (Email Jefferson Williams) joined ESI in October 2012. He is Associate Research Director of the CRU and Medical Director for the Special Operations team and also serves as Deputy Medical Director for Wake County Emergency Medical Services. He is an emergency medicine physician at WakeMed and he completed an EMS fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011. While earning his Master’s in Public Health at UNC, Dr. Williams received research training and studied emergency medicine and disaster preparedness. His research interests include out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation, bystander CPR and public access defibrillation, and the expanding role of paramedics in community health care. Johna Register-Mihalik, PhD, ATC, (Email Johna Register-Mihalik) is the CRU’s Senior Research Associate. Dr. Register-Mihalik joined the CRU in February 2012. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Alabama with a focus in Athletic Training and her graduate work in Sports Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Mihalik then completed her doctorate degree and post-doctoral training in the Matthew Gfeller Sports-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center at UNC-Chapel Hill with a focus on mild traumatic brain injury and injury prevention in children. She has published several articles and has been funded on various projects related to sports-related concussion. She has a strong interest in pediatric injury prevention, management of large clinical datasets and traumatic brain injury among pediatric and adolescent aged individuals.
