Special Infant Care Clinic (SICC)

The Special Infant Care Clinic (SICC) has been caring for children since 1975, and thousands have been served since its inception. The purpose of the Special Infant Care Clinic is to provide medical and developmental follow-up for infants born prematurely or children with special medical or developmental needs. Many of the children seen in SICC are graduates of the Intensive Care Nurseries at WakeMed’s two hospitals, Rex Hospital, as well as other area hospitals.

Children Served

  • Newborns to age three
  • Graduates of the Intensive Care Nurseries
  • Children with chronic medical problems affecting development
  • Children whose parents or physicians have concerns or questions about their development

Services

  • Discuss concerns of parents
  • Provide comprehensive medical care for at- risk children
  • Evaluate physical, mental and language development
  • Help support parents in providing follow-up care for the needs of their children

Billing
Cost varies with services provided. Medicaid and private insurances are accepted. Financial counselors are available to assist in answering questions. If you have questions about your bill, please call 350-8153.

Staff
Our SICC staff of experienced medical and developmental professionals is dedicated to providing personalized treatment for your child.

Physicians
Neonatologists specialize in medical and developmental evaluation, treatment, and referral of children from birth to age three.

Nurse Practitioners
Provide evaluation and treatment of children with a variety of physical and social needs.

Pediatric Psychologist
Specializes in the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional development of young children, and the emotional needs of their parents.

Pediatric Physical Therapist
Specializes in motor development and movement in infancy and childhood.

Pediatric Occupational Therapist
Specializes in motor, sensory integration and self-help development in infancy and childhood.

Child Development Specialist
Specializes in the development and learning needs of infants and young children and their families.

Speech-Language Pathologist
Specializes in language development and early communication.

Appointments
Referrals are accepted from pediatricians, family practitioners, Wake County Human Services, agencies of other counties, and other community agencies. Children who were previously patients of WakeMed Raleigh Campus, WakeMed Cary Hospital, Rex Hospital or other local hospitals may be given an appointment prior to their hospital discharge.

Please remember to bring the following information to every appointment:

  • The patient’s insurance or Medicaid cards
  • The patient’s immunization records
  • Medications taken by the patient
  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to allow time for registration.
  • Due to the specialty nature of our clinic, your appointment may be lengthy. Please bring comfort items for your child.
  • You may have to reschedule your appointment if you arrive more than 30 minutes late.

Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) Nutritionist Provides information and support on nutrition.

Nurses
Assist with health care needs, including immunizations and information on child health care. Coordinates care with Wake County Human Services.

Our Location
The Special Infant Care Clinic (SICC) is located within the Pediatric Clinic on the second floor of the Andrews Center on WakeMed's Raleigh Campus. Parking is available in front of the building in the P4 Yellow two-story parking deck.
