Medical Intensive Care Unit

WakeMed’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) has a longstanding history of providing the very highest standards of care to patients dealing with complex medical conditions. The unit cares for patients who have lung disease, infections, kidney and liver conditions, gastrointestinal complications and overdose. We also are specialists in providing continuous renal replacement therapy and induced hypothermia for patients admitted for cardiac arrest.

Setting the Standard for Excellence in Nursing Care

Our team of talented nurses is recognized as some of the best in their field, and many hold national certification in critical care. They are joined by a support team of nursing technicians and clinical secretaries who are dedicated to providing outstanding customer service to patients and families. Since our unit is designed to care for patients with a variety of conditions, our physician team includes medical intensivists who are the specialists in critical care medicine and pulmonology.

Technology to Provide an Extra Layer of Assurance for Patients and Families

Patients in our Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) are monitored using eICU® Services, which provides two-way audio and video monitoring. This advanced capability is yet another layer of care provided by our nurses and physicians who are in an off-site location.

Each year, more than 700 patients locally and in the greater Triangle region are admitted to this specialty nursing unit.

Most patients stay an average of four days in the unit, but some patients undergoing more complex treatment may remain longer before being transferred to a step-down unit. Once they no longer need intensive care, most patients are moved to a general medical/surgical unit or one that has some continued level of monitoring.

While patients are in our MICU, families and loved ones have access to our comfortable and spacious Critical Care & Surgery Waiting Room, located on the second floor, adjacent to all of our intensive care units. Open 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, our CCSWR is a warm and supportive place to wait while your loved ones is hospitalized.

Our MICU team is proud of the level of care and expertise we offer patients and families in our community. This cohesive nursing unit and physician team deliver excellent care each day and are setting a new standard in the art and science of nursing care.
