Advocacy and Information  

  • Americans with Disabilities Act: Provides information on disability rights laws.
  • Community Partnerships: Provides services to people with disabilities of all ages. Programs include preschool services, brain injury support services, supported employment and family education. 919-781-3616
  • Family Support Network: Provides services to families of children with developmental disabilities, chronic illnesses or other special needs. 919-662-4600
  • North Carolina Human Relations Commission: Provides information regarding fair housing and housing discrimination concerns. 919-789-5930
  • North Carolina Industrial Commission: Provides information on workers’ compensation. 919-807-2500
  • Resources for Seniors: Provides information on home and community-based resources so disabled and senior adults can maximize their independence for as long as possible while remaining in their home. 919-872-7933
  • Triangle Disability Advocates: Assists families in the Social Security application process. 919-350-8539

  • Community Alternatives Program for Disabled Adults: An alternative to nursing home care for adults who require a high level of care and who meet strict financial criteria. 919-872-7933
  • Independent Living, Raleigh Office: Offers a variety of services, including home modifications, personal assistance services and counseling, to people with disabilities that meet certain financial criteria. Available statewide. 919-715-0543
  • Meals on Wheels of Wake County: Home-delivered meals for disabled and homebound seniors. 919-833-1749
  • North Carolina Assistive Technology Program, Raleigh Office: Provides assistive technology services and information through demonstrations, loans and training. Available statewide. 919-850-2787

Counseling/Mental Health Services

  • Catholic Social Services: Provides counseling on a sliding fee scale. 919-790-8533
  • Hopeline: 24-hour/seven-day-a-week confidential telephone counseling. 919-231-4525
  • Interact: Crisis intervention, counseling and shelter for victims of domestic violence. 919-828-7501

  • Safety Net Medical Providers: Provides information on doctors and dentists who accept Medicaid, listings of health centers, free medical clinics and more.

Home Modifications and Accessibility

  • Center for Independent Living: Home modifications and assistive equipment. 919-715-0543
  • Center for Universal Design: Assists with planning for modifications in homes. Will talk with callers about needs and can send information packet. 800-647-6777
  • Imagine: Accepts donated mobility and other durable medical equipment, and has donated equipment available at no charge. 919-779-3487
  • Resources for Seniors Housing and Home Improvement: Home adaptations including wheelchair ramps and grab bars, and minor home repair related to health and safety. For homeowners 55 and older, fees are based on income. 919-872-7933
  • Ramp and other product companies: Multiple companies rent or sell a variety of home modification supplies.

  • Medicare: Provides information to help select a Medicare prescription drug plan. 800-633-4227
  • Medicine Assistance Tool: Offers a single point of access to more than 275 public and private patient assistance programs, including more than 150 programs offered by pharmaceutical companies.

  • NeedyMeds.com: Provides information about patient assistance programs that provide no-cost prescription medications to eligible participants.

Transportation

  • Accessible Raleigh Transportation (ART): Raleigh residents with a physical or mental disability that makes it impossible to drive a car and/or use the city bus system are eligible for ART. ART provides subsidized door-to-door transportation service through participating taxi companies within Raleigh’s city limits and within three-quarters of a mile of CAT fixed routes. 919-890-3459
  • Capital Area Transit - City Bus Service: Discounted rates are available for senior citizens and people with disabilities. 919-828-7228
  • Center for Volunteer Caregiving: Volunteer-based transportation, limited availability. 919-460-0567
  • Durham Area Transit Authority: Discounted rates are available for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. 919-485-RIDE
  • DATA ACCESS: Provides curb-to-curb transportation service for eligible riders to all locations within the city of Durham and to any location outside the city that is three-quarters of a mile of any fixed-route service operated by DATA. DATA ACCESS provides service during the same hours and on the same days as the regular fixed-route service. Must submit application. 919-560-1551

  • TRACS Edcap: Program provides priority in scheduling transportation to seniors and those who are disabled.
