WakeMed Pulmonary Rehab & Cardiopulmonary Therapy is designed to help people with breathing problems or limited endurance for ANY reason regain their independence and ability to do the things they enjoy.

Pulmonary rehab is available for patients with a qualifying chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) diagnosis or post-COVID diagnosis.

Cardiopulmonary therapy is available to patients who are having breathing or endurance problems for ANY medical reason, such as:

  • Emphysema
  • Lung cancer
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Heart and vascular issues
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Pre or post-surgery

What is Pulmonary Rehab and Cardiopulmonary Therapy?

The goal of cardiopulmonary therapy is to assist participants in becoming more independent and active without getting fatigued or short of breath.

WakeMed Pulmonary Rehab and Cardiopulmonary Therapy includes:

  • Closely monitored exercise
  • Breathing exercises & strategies
  • Nutritional information
  • Tips on saving your energy to do the things you want to do
  • Education to help you understand and manage your health

The group meets 3 to 5 days a week for 6 to 8 weeks. The program is led by specially trained physical therapists with a team of respiratory therapists and clinical aides.  They will design a plan that meets your specific abilities and goals.

Individual therapy is available for patients who are unable to participate in the group.
