Dr. Bill Atkinson to Depart WakeMed Health & Hospitals
RALEIGH, N.C. (September 26, 2013) – With the start of WakeMed’s new fiscal year on October 1, 2013, Dr. Bill Atkinson will step down from his role as President & CEO of WakeMed Health & Hospitals. Citing differences in the future direction of the organization, the WakeMed Board of Directors and Dr. Atkinson agree that the separation is in the best interest of both parties.
The decision was made last night at a meeting of the WakeMed Board of Directors. William H. McBride, Board chair, says, “As we move into the next phase of healthcare reform and respond to the continued growth of this community and region, there are going to be challenges and opportunities for WakeMed. The Board of Directors looks forward to welcoming a new leader to successfully guide us through this new era of healthcare."
McBride continues, “For over 50 years, WakeMed has been proud to serve this community and uphold its longstanding mission of meeting the healthcare needs of the patients and communities we serve, and this will not change. This transition will also not alter our commitment to acute and critical care, children’s, cardiovascular care, rehabilitation, trauma, or our other initiatives currently underway such as the construction of the North Women’s Hospital, enhanced engagement with physician partners and more.”
The Board of Directors is working closely with our senior executive team to develop a comprehensive succession plan that will ensure a smooth transition over the next several months and well into the future. At this time, an interim CEO has not been named. A national search will be conducted to find a replacement CEO.
“We are thankful to Bill for his years of tenure and leadership as we’ve managed the many complexities associated with today’s healthcare environment and the economic uncertainties facing hospitals across the state and nation,” says McBride, “As we enter this new chapter in WakeMed’s history, our unwavering commitment to serving our patients, physicians, employees, volunteers and community partners remains our primary focus as we prepare for the future. WakeMed is fortunate to be in an extremely strong position as we face this time of transition – both financially and operationally, thanks to our exceptional leadership team, many committed physician leaders and our strong and dedicated workforce,” concluded McBride.
