WakeMed Brings Emergency Care to Garner

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 15, 2013) – On August 19, WakeMed Garner Healthplex will open for patient care, bringing emergency and other outpatient services to a growing yet medically underserved community. The new facility is conveniently located on Hwy. 70 between Garner and Clayton near the White Oak Crossing shopping center. The WakeMed Garner Healthplex is the system’s seventh emergency department.

This new emergency department will serve residents of Southeast Wake County and Johnston County, including the 87,000 households within a five mile radius.

WakeMed Garner Healthplex and all WakeMed Emergency Departments are staffed by the same emergency physicians and are backed by our Level I Trauma Center and WakeMed Children’s in Raleigh. This is very significant to local families since 30 percent of all WakeMed stand-alone emergency department patients are children.

In addition to the 10-bed, 24/7 Emergency Department, the 50,000-square-foot facility offers lab and imaging services including diagnostic x-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans and MRI as well as physician offices. An estimated 12,000 to 15,000 patients are expected to receive treatment in the new Emergency Department during the first year.

“Garner is a growing community, and we are excited to be growing with it,” commented Carolyn Knaup, RN, MHA, WakeMed senior vice president of ambulatory services and physician operations. “We look forward to bringing convenient, accessible healthcare resources to Garner, and our staff is committed to creating a strong hometown feel within our facility.”

The addition of the new Healthplex created 175 new jobs, and many of the employees live in or near Garner. WakeMed Garner Healthplex will also serve as the base for WakeMed’s Air Mobile medical helicopter operations.

In addition, several WakeMed affiliated physician offices will be opening at the site in late September and early October. WakeMed Faculty Physicians – Carolina Cardiology and Wake Specialty Physicians – Garner Primary Care will both open at WakeMed Garner Healthplex on Monday, September 23. Wake Specialty Physicians – ENT Head & Neck Surgery will open its new location at the Healthplex on October 1.

Bring the entire family out on Saturday, August 17 from 8:30-11:30am, and help us celebrate the opening of the WakeMed Garner Healthplex. Following the 8:30 a.m. dedication ceremony, enjoy a free pancake breakfast, tours of the new facility and live entertainment. Plus, kids will enjoy a teddy bear clinic, tours of emergency vehicles - including WakeMed Air Mobile, crafts, games and a visit from Twinkle, WakeMed Children’s mascot.

WakeMed received Certificate of Need (CON) approval to build the WakeMed Garner Healthplex in August 2009. WakeMed’s total investment in the project to date is approximately $17 million. WakeMed Garner Healthplex is located at 400 U.S. Highway 70 East Garner, NC 27529

WakeMed Health & Hospitals operates three additional Healthplexes in Wake County: Apex Healthplex, North Healthplex (North Raleigh) and Brier Creek Healthplex, all of which have 24/7 stand-alone emergency departments. WakeMed’s experience with stand-alone emergency departments has shown that usage and acuity levels are very similar to emergency services offered in locations with inpatient beds. The system also features three hospital-based emergency departments with inpatient beds including the Adult Emergency Department and dedicated Children’s Emergency Department at WakeMed Raleigh Campus as well as the WakeMed Cary Hospital Emergency Department.
