WakeMed Receives Approval to Add Eight Rehab Beds

RALEIGH, N.C. (January 30, 2013) – WakeMed Health & Hospitals, the largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation care in central North Carolina, has earned Certificate of Need (CON) approval to add eight additional rehabilitation beds on the WakeMed Raleigh Campus.

The WakeMed Rehabilitation Hospital currently has 84 beds and approval to build 20 additional beds, 12 of which were awarded in November 2012 and eight of which were awarded on January 28, for a total of 104 beds. The construction of these new beds is allowing WakeMed to convert the vast majority of rehab beds from semi-private to private rooms and to add four dedicated pediatric rehabilitation rooms that offer child-friendly activities and décor as well as sleeping couches for parents.

Additionally, WakeMed features the only rehabilitation hospital in the state concentrating on meeting the needs of spinal cord injury patients. Therefore, a section of the new unit will be dedicated to spinal cord injury patients and the specialized technology and staff needed to care for this fragile patient population.

“WakeMed Rehab has approximately 2,000 admissions per year and is a significant referral center for patients across the state, offering unique facilities for general neurological, orthopaedic, multi-trauma, cardiac and stroke rehabilitation care,” commented Stan Taylor, WakeMed vice president of corporate planning. “WakeMed’s original application was for 12 of the available 20 rehabilitation beds identified in the 2013 State Medical Facilities Plan. We support the CON process and think this is a good decision by the state. As such, we do not anticipate appealing the decision.”

Specializing in stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury care, the WakeMed Rehabilitation Hospital supports WakeMed’s Level 1 Trauma Center, advanced critical care services, as well as the hospital’s robust cardiac and stroke programs.
