CARY, N.C. (February 7, 2011) – Today, WakeMed Health & Hospitals is pleased to announce it is offering cardiac rehab in western Wake County. The WakeMed Cary Hospital Cardiac Rehab Program is located at the Kraft Family YMCA with classes offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 to 8 am. Additional classes will be added as enrollment grows.
Cardiac rehab offers comprehensive nutrition, lifestyle and physical activity counseling for patients who have suffered a cardiac event, such as a heart attack, heart surgery, cardiac catheterization or are diagnosed with a debilitating cardiac condition such as heart failure. The participants’ goal is to improve physical fitness and overall health, and reduce the risk of future heart problems.
“For people with a cardiac condition that live in Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina and other surrounding communities, the WakeMed Cary Hospital Cardiac Rehab Program offers them a choice to get additional support and care for their recovery or while living with a cardiac condition at a beautiful facility located closer to them,” commented WakeMed Cary Hospital Cardiac Rehab Medical Director, Pratik Desai, MD, Cary Cardiology.
Cardiac rehab has been shown to lower the risk of heart attack and heart disease in elderly patients, as proven in a study reviewing 30,000 Medicare records completed by the Center for Clinical and Genetic Economics at Duke Clinical Research Institute, in Durham, N.C. The study also found that fewer than one in five eligible patients attends cardiac rehab, and that the more sessions a patient attends, the better the outcomes. The findings were published in the Dec. 22 issue of Circulation.
Dr. Desai continued, “We see similar results in our practice; patients who participate in cardiac rehab following a cardiac event are generally healthier and have a better quality of life. Cardiac rehab really does seem to help these patients learn to manage their heart disease.”
The WakeMed Cary Hospital Cardiac Rehab is the fourth cardiac rehab program offered by WakeMed. Additional programs include WakeMed Raleigh Campus, Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital and Sampson Regional Medical Center. The Cardiac Rehab staff for each program comprises a medical director, ACLS registered nurse, exercise and fitness specialists, registered dietitian and a stress management counselor. A physician referral is necessary for program admission. For more information or to find out you can be a participant, please call the WakeMed Cary Hospital Cardiac Rehab Program at 919-350-1875.
