CPE Residency
CPE Application
The Residency Year at WakeMed centers around Pastoral Care and 3 related themes. The year is divided up into 3 units. Each unit involves the overall theme of understanding what it means to care for patients and families emotionally and spiritually within the context of the contemporary medical institution. We cover such areas as crisis and grief, salvation and health, and the role of the minister in wholistic medicine.
Each of the 3 units focuses on a theme related to Pastoral Care:
- Theology: The first theme we address is understanding human development and human nature from a theological perspective. We try to cover the theological themes that have been a major part of the history of the church and how these theological themes inform our practice of ministry in our day and age. We hope the student begins to develop a theological anthropology.
- Psychology: The second theme we deal with is understanding persons from a developmental perspective. We seek to understand how humans develop from a psychological perspective and how this impacts our doing pastoral care with persons in our day and age.
- Leadership: The last theme focuses on being a leader. The emphasis in this theme is being an authentic leader who participates in healing and pastoral care and is aware of the leader role in the systems theory.
By focusing on these major themes, participants in our residency program will address the major pastoral care themes, enabling them to be at the advanced level of Clinical Pastoral Education - both as a learner and a practitioner. Our desire is to enroll persons at a high level of professionalism who can potentially be employed as a hospital chaplain, lead a congregation, or continue their development in either chaplaincy, supervision, or pastoral counseling.
WakeMed is an intense setting for learning and practicing the ministry of pastoral care. The emphasis in our program is to care for people spiritually and to build their sense of hope and will in a positive way. We invite persons who are interested in addressing these types of themes and developing personally and professionally to apply for our program.
